The orthodontic toothbrush was designed at the request of and in conjunction with KT Orthodontics in New Zealand.
They developed the orthodontic toothbrush as Katherine (KT) did not want to contribute to plastic pollution and was frustrated at the lack of alternatives to plastic for orthodontic toothbrushes.
To this end they are confident that this was a world first and as far as they are aware this is still the only non plastic orthodontic toothbrush in the world.
The handle is made from bamboo and is fully biodegradable.
The bristles are made from nylon 6 and recyclable. (Nylon 6 is a recyclable nylon but as the quantities are so small kerbside recycling cant realistically deal with it).
Go Bamboo recommend the bristles are shaved off or pulled out and the handle composted or re purposed and the bristles put in the household waste/rubbish. This reduces the plastic content of the toothbrush by more than 99% by weight.
This is a slightly imperfect outcome for both us and Go Bamboo but the biodegradable plastics currently available do not make a technically good bristle.
The box is cardboard and can be either recycled or composted. The glue to keep the box together is rice glue and the ink on the box vegetable ink.
The reason for this is that the product and packaging were designed to be disposed of in and around your own home without leaving any residue. Sold individually
